“The Substance of Her Sigh”
Will you read to me? Never has a man read to me, she asks of him. A random page he turns. One write in particular catches his eye:
The florists’ business is brisk
The chocolatiers are filled with glee,
Their coffers could I enhance,
But I’ve bottled my poetry
Liquid lust I might have poured
A message may’ve it contained,
But my romance runs much deeper
than a momentary refrain
A customary bouquet I’ll send
Your favorite nuts and chews,
Though they pale in comparison
to this inkling you can’t refuse
That knowing twinkle in your eye
The helpless quiver along your thigh,
The ceaseless burning in your yearning
Am I the substance of your sigh?
Her eyes still shut, she sinks deeper into his lap.
The woman’s all his.
